Senate vote on Dream Act expected next week
Senate vote on Dream Act expected next week
by Erin Kelly - Dec. 9, 2010 11:44 AM
Gannett Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - The Senate on Thursday postponed until next week a vote on the DREAM Act, which would allow young immigrants brought to this country illegally as children to earn legal status if they attend college or serve in the U.S. military.
The Senate had been scheduled to vote on its version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act on Thursday morning. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced that he wanted to scrap the Senate version in favor of a different version passed Wednesday night by the House.
Wednesday's vote was the first time the House has approved the DREAM Act in the 10 years since the legislation was first introduced in early 2001.
Now, if Reid manages to wrangle enough votes for the bill, it can go straight to President Barack Obama for his signature instead of having to go back to the House.
Reid won a 59-40 vote Thursday to table the Senate version of the bill.
The majority leader still faces an uphill battle to try to pass the legislation in the final days of the 111th Congress. Reid must get 60 votes to overcome a Republican filibuster.
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., is leading conservative opposition to the bill, saying it would reward lawlessness and encourage more illegal immigration.
Groups opposed to illegal immigration said they will continue to rally opponents to defeat the legislation, which they denounce as amnesty.
"While some pundits, reporters and groups feel confident that amnesty will fail in the Senate, we do not share that confidence," said William Gheen, president of the Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, in a letter to supporters. "The chances amnesty will pass the Senate and become law are very high. Only a few Republicans in the Senate need to surprisingly join with the Democrats to do the deed."
Immigrant rights' groups and their allies in Congress say they will use the extra time to try to convince GOP senators that the bill is needed to help young people who want to serve their adopted country and contribute fully to American society.
"Senate Republicans have offered a variety of process excuses for why we shouldn't pass this historic bill," said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum. "A postponed vote on DREAM will allow every single possible objection to be addressed. Then we will have arrived at a moment of truth for Republicans. The fastest-growing segment of the electorate is staring them in the eye, wondering what they will do."

Illegal aliens are going home, not to college, not to the US military. Why would any American citizen want illegal aliens to join the US military? ARE YOU INSANE??!! Why not sign up the Taliban and offer them a chance for a pathway to US citizenship so they can become part of our "electorate"? Oh wait ... that's exactly what the Dream Act does. Never mind.
KILL THIS BILL ONCE AND FOR ALL and oust every traitor in Congress who even thinks of voting for it in 2012 or 2014 whenever their term comes up.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

Illegals
Let's work together and we will win. We do not want amnesty for illegal aliens and that is what counts. Senators and House members must work only for US citizens. They must not work for illegal aliens. The GOP must stop this madness. On Nov 2nd, 2010, we elected the Republicans to kill this madness. Next week we have to do it. Let's go GOP, let's do it.

Re: Illegals
I had the opportunity to watch the house and senate for the first time. It was a first experience because my hours have been cut and I have a bit of extra time these days.
Anyway, I really must give Reid some credit for his ability to tweak the system to his advantage. It is too bad he is not on our side. We need some evil because being the honorable guy does not seem to be important anymore.
Where was the republican leaders when Nancy gave her talk yesterday? Maybe, I missed the republican rally speech.
Truely a disgusting group of leaders on both sides. I felt like vomiting and now understand why this country is crashing and burning.
We need a real leader to save this country.

Response from Austin (My second home)
I had posted this on a seperate catagory also...
received this AM (10DEC10);
"Dear Friend:
Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 3992, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. I welcome your thoughts and comments.
On November 30, 2010, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) introduced this bill, which would allow for a 10-year conditional non-immigrant visa that would lead to eventual citizenship. Once they become U.S. citizens, these individuals would by law be able to petition for family members to also gain citizenship. This would therefore expand citizenship beyond the intended students. Because of this, I am unable to support the current version of the DREAM Act.
OIFIIIMP> Apparently she recognizes the validity of SEN Sessions' quote, that catagorizes the "Dream Act" as "...reckless proposal for mass amnestyâ€

If this crap is approved in the Senate, it will spell trouble because it would give pro-illegal advocates a victory towards rewarding voluntary or involuntary lawbreakers. Not to mention that tens of thousands would serve in the U.S. military for a minimum of 2 years. Nothing like having illegal aliens in charge of combat or representing the U.S. military. Not to mention putting them in U.S. uniform.
That part is beyond belief. Hopefully the Senate will represent the will of the American people and not the will of special interests that, for some reason, want -illegal- immigration to flourish in this country. It's hard to believe that so many corporations, churches, representatives and individuals would fight so hard to preserve something that's harmful to society and illegal. But not surprising. It's even more shocking that so many still can't tell the difference between legal and illegal immigration and, ignorantly call "immigration" a broken system. Broken because it doesn't reward invaders with green cards and because legal immigration filters candidates? Fixed when it rewards invaders with residency and a path to citizenship?
