MILWAUKEE -- The threat of the H1N1 virus had apparently had little if any effect on immigration rallies in Wisconsin on Friday.

Thousands marched from Fifth Street and Washington on the south side two and a half miles through downtown to Veterans Park by the lakefront.

Milwaukee health officials have not called for the cancellation of large scale events.

"We need to participate in any activity intended to provide for the safety of everybody in this country, and we separate that from immigration reform," Spanish Center Director Tony Baez said.

"We have big problems ahead, and we're here to say, 'You know, immigrants are part of the solution and that we need to continue to support,'" said Christine Neumann-Ortiz of Voces de la Frontera.

A similar rally was held in Madison where organizers called for improved working and living conditions for immigrants and low income workers.
