In the tangle of immigration law, one family faces separation

Friday was the last day of school for 13-year-old Kellyn Romero Ramos, an immigrant from Honduras who crossed three countries' borders in search of her mother.

It was her last day as an eighth-grader at Williston Middle, and possibly her last day as a student in the United States.

An immigration judge told Kellyn, who's here illegally, to leave the country - her home since she was 11 - by Monday. It doesn't matter that her mother is here legally and her step-sister is a U.S. citizen.

"Something has to happen," said Kellyn's mother, Erlin Ramos, speaking in their tidy two-story apartment. "Someone has to help me. Kellyn doesn't have anybody else."

A hearing with immigration officials is scheduled for June 19, said Paul Suhr, her immigration attorney.

Kellyn's situation underscores the complexity of the immigration debate as the U.S. Senate stalls sweeping reform.

In the teen's case, it's unlikely that even the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act about which U.S. senators were sparring could help if she disobeys her order to leave the country. The proposal would legalize an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, said his organization played a central role in the apparent defeat of the proposal. He added that the majority of people living in the United States believe the government is not doing its job because it has failed to enforce existing immigration laws and secure the nation's borders. Gheen called Kellyn's case exceptional and rare.

"I love children," he said. "All Americans love children. We can't let one case decide policy for the nation. Americans want enforcement."

Living here legally

Kellyn's mother, Erlin Ramos, has permission to work in the United States.

Ramos, a single mother when she came to the United States in 1997 in search of work, said she would not leave her daughter again.

"I tell other mothers, 'Don't leave your children,'â—

Tough decisions have to be made! If this government would have done it's job and enforced our immigration laws...this country would NOT be in the shape it is in today! You can't just take the easy way out and give Amnesty to EVERYONE!!! We expect our government ...who created this mess... to do the right thing...even it it's tough!

Enforce our existing laws!!!! That's the right thing to do!!

They should all go and get in line in the visa line in their home country. This is a sacrifice they must both make if they want to really become US citizens.

Breaking into our country is against the LAW. This woman probably has saved enough money to return and file for the visas. If they traveled that many miles to come to the US they can endure another sacrifice to COME THE RIGHT WAY. They can be proud of doing it the right way as well.

This story should speak loud and clear to illegals that if you break our laws, you risk family hardships here and back in your home country. Don't risk your childrens safety by leaving them. Come the legal way.

How did this happen to Kellyn Romero Ramos? Her mother ran off and left the child in another country 10 years ago and has had an anchor baby here.

I think the mother is the issue and this is an abandoned and mistreated child. The irresponsible mother made bad choices and she should right her wrong so she should go back home with the child she has tossed out. That mother should also be charged with aiding and harboring an illegal alien.

America needs to get tough, enforce our laws and that will discourage any more of this outrageous stupidity.

Everyone always ask, what's happening to the youth of America, well with parents like this. Clearly, that is where the blame should lay and not on the teachers, fellow citizens or police officers that have to deal with the byproduct of a poor upbringing.

I'm sorry but something doesn't sound right about this story, it is hard to believe a judge would tell a 13 year old she has to leave the country if her MOTHER has legal status! Do most kids have a green card to or do they usually just come with their parents? I don' t know but it doesn't sound right!!

Unlike her daughter, Ramos might benefit from immigration reform because she has temporary protected status. That temporary permission was given to Hondurans, Nicaraguans and Salvadorans living in the country when Hurricane Mitch devastated their countries in 1998.

Even worse she left her baby, 3-4 year old daughter in a city she evacuated because of devistaiton.

There is a real ugly word I want to call this woman right now.

I totally agree. Something about this is fishy. The girl left on her own and crossed three borders on her on at 11 yrs old?

Gotta love a mother who put a job and her own desires before that of her child. Did this same Mom do anything in the 9 years she has been here to try to legally bring her daughter here? Why didn't the child qualify for status along with the Mom?Where is the Dad? Too many unanwered questions in this story for me.

But if the mother is here legally wouldn't the child automatcally be allowed to stay, if she is under age, I don't know but guess I just thought thats how it was.

Dix, you saw what I did not catch on first read, that the mother abandoned her and came here. What kind of mother would do that? We don't need the likes of her here. Why should we be importing bad parents into our country?
