Allard stands by CAFTA

Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard touted the Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) as good for Colorado farmers and ranchers Wednesday morning at a meeting sponsored by the Chamber of the Americas.

Colorado's Republican Senator said CAFTA would immediately eliminate a portion of the tariffs imposed on farm and ranch exports from Colorado to Central American countries.

Allard noted that Colorado exports are up more than 200 percent since the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed in 1993.

Allard said free trade agreement support reform in nations with struggling democracies.

"Democracy remains America's No. 1 export, as far as I'm concerned," Allard said.

In response to a question about the ongoing Cuban embargo, Allard said Cuban Americans support the embargo, but he thinks the country could open up over time because of President Bush's overall support of free trade.

Allard said the involvement of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Cuba's affairs could set back Cuban relations with the U.S. but also called televangelist Pat Robertson's recent comments about assassinating Chavez "ill advised," and said he wished Robertson had not made them.
