Nine workers who service U.S. Navy planes at a Winston-Salem airport were arrested on alleged immigration violations.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Immigration officers swarmed a Winston-Salem company doing maintenance work on U.S. Navy planes and arrested nine people they believed were in the United States illegally, a television station reported Tuesday.

Agents from the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement made the arrests Tuesday at a hangar at Smith-Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem used by Aerospace Manufacturing Inc., WTVD in Durham reported.

A spokeswoman for the immigration agency in Atlanta did not return calls to The Associated Press late Tuesday. A message left at the company's Winston-Salem office was not returned late Tuesday.

The station reported that the British citizens arrested were working on P-3 Orion surveillance planes and that the federal agency was making a national effort to find illegal aliens doing work for the Pentagon.

The suspects were being held in the Forsyth County Jail, WTVD reported.
