U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found 655 pounds of marijuana on three trains trying to enter the country through Nogales in the past week.
On March 29, at 7:30 p.m., officers detected a discrepancy in a rail car filled with grain, a release from the agency said. They discovered 88 packages of marijuana weighing nearly 517 pounds inside a compartment that had been built into the structure.
On Tuesday at about 3:15 p.m., officers noticed suspicious activity near one of the rail cars. They didn’t find anybody, but did discover two bales of marijuana weighing 48 pounds, the release said.
The last seizure occurred that same day at 5 p.m. when officers noticed anomalies on a cement rail car. With help of a dog, officers found five bails of marijuana weighing more than 90 pounds hidden under the cement.
The 655 pounds has an estimated value of $377,000 according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center. Since Oct. 1, officers at the Nogales port of entry have found nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana in 15 smuggling attempts on trains, the release said. In fiscal year 2007, officers stopped 367 pounds in three attempts.
