America reduced to the status of a service economy

    Daily Hearld

U.S. cannot afford to export jobs

    Published: 8/30/2007 12:14 AM

Sara Bryant nailed it with her Aug. 4 letter to the editor. I'm sure she had more to say, but did not want to exceed the allowed number of words.

For example, every job we export for whatever reason, is one less contributor to the Social Security fund. This at a time when we are being told that the fund will run out of money in the near future. In the meanwhile, we are being told that we need to allow illegal immigrants to come here and remain here in order to perform jobs that Americans will not do.

    Whatever happened to "common sense"?

As Ms. Bryant so eloquently expressed it, a lot of this stuff is dangerous, or at the very least risky to use. I for one will rather buy a used American power tool from the '50s and rebuild it than try to use a Chinese product of unknown quality.

There is another group of reasons for not buying Chinese goods, and that reason is financial. The Chinese are buying American securities with the money we send them. That is the money left over after they build up their military machine with our money!

Incidentally, the problem with the wheat gluten could just as easily been a human problem. Wheat gluten is widely used in products for human consumption.

It's sad that we have been reduced to the status of a service economy when there was a time when "Made in America" really meant something.

It really is sad. We used to manufacture so many things in this country. Until those jobs started being exported or taken by illegals here, that made a great middle class that was the backcone of this country. People could work at the same place for 40 years, buy a house, send kids to college etc.

Now most manufacturing jobs are gone. Customer service is outsourced. We have the HB-1 Visa-which in my opinion is not needed. it is another tool used to keep American wages supressed.

Beyond that, most things are made in China and as we have seen unsafe. Illegals pick vegetables and fruits and more and more there are bacteria outbreaks. it is very very scary.

The sad part about this whole mess is that we as Americans have to share much of the blame for this happening. We are the world's largest consumer of goods, and Americans have been on a spending binge for the past 20 years. We have wanted cheap goods in large quantities, and because of our business taxes, regulations, labor laws, etc, companies here went overseas to exploit the cheap labor to keep costs down. Why do you ask? Yes, corporate greed has a huge part of this, but our ever insatiable demand for this cheap crap from China and elsewhere is going to backfire on us, and soon. (Personally, I don't see how buying a blender every three months from wally mart is such a good deal compared to spending a little more to buy a blender that lasts a few years anyway.)
If you look at our savings (I) part of the economy, you will see that we are in the negative. This isn't good. Combine this with our ever climbing trade deficit (due to our inbalanced export/import ratio) we are in for a bumpy economic recovery.
And if you're not scared enough, consider this portion. China owns almost $1 trillion of our national debt, and if they ever decide to cash in their dollars, the dollar value would drop like a rock, and very quickly, which could send us into another depression.

The really sad part is everything coming from these other countries is nothing but junk, at one time there was real pride in almost everything made in America, I think most Americans these days do not even realize their talents or what they are truly capable of!
