American Science gets $4.2 million order for X-ray systems
Boston Business Journal - 8:45 AM EDT Friday

American Science and Engineering Inc. said Friday the company received a $4.2 million government order to provide screening systems that will be used on the nation's borders.

The Billerica, Mass. X-ray technology firm (Nasdaq: ASEI) said the order from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is for multiple Z Backscatter Van X-ray screening systems, which officials will use to combat illegal immigration, as well as drug and contraband smuggling.

The system, according to a company statement, reveals contraband that transmission X-rays miss -- such as explosives and plastic weapons -- and provides photo-like imaging for rapid analysis. The ZBV has a "drive-by" capability that allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging of suspect vehicles and objects as the ZBV drives past.

The delivery order includes CBP-customized operator training, service, and labor warranty.
