Americans Warned Not To Travel To Mexico

Avoid travel to Baja California Norte. That's the warning from the Baja Safari Mexico Club Thursday. The recent surge in kidnappings prompted the travel warning, which is in effect through spring.

The Baja Safari Mexico Club's president is telling its members that they should avoid Baja California Norte. The club says it's just too dangerous to travel there in light of the recent kidnappings, which they say are happening at an alarming rate.

Some kidnapping cases include tourists being kidnapped in Tijuana and taken to an ATM where they are forced to withdraw money and give it to the kidnapper, before they are released. Other kidnapping cases go on for days with the suspects demanding thousands of dollars.

In fact, kidnappings have become so common in Baja California Norte, that now the kidnappers are starting to cross the border and kidnap people in San Diego and take them back to Mexico.

The Baja Safari Mexico Club is now hoping that the Mexican authorities will crack down on this growing crime.

"It's very serious and primarily because we don't have anybody out front taking charge and handling this. And, this is the reason why we're advising citizens, who are crossing into Mexico, be advised that they should be careful about their travel if they are going to go," said Mike Overcast with the Baja Safari Mexico Club.

The Baja Safari Mexico Club stresses that this warning only extends to Baja California Norte. They say that the southern part of Baja is very safe, and advise travelers to go ahead with their trips to that area.

The Baja Safari Mexico Club has about 10,000 members

I don't know why anyone would want to go there anyway.....
The Mexican government won't crack down on that either, it's more money flowing into their country...one way or another....it's all about

At this point I wouldn't dream of giving Mexico a dime
of my money. I'm so glad I didn't sign up for that 3 day
    cruise.

I bet President Bush and his closest friend, the Honorable Vicente Fox, just hate it when news like this gets out !!

I would enter Mexico only if it was in uniform with 15 million other uniformed Americans with a modern-day Patton leading us.

Advisory Warns People About Traveling To Northern Baja
Travel Warning Issued By Baja Safari Mexico Club

    POSTED: 6:39 pm PDT April 14, 2006
    UPDATED: 7:01 pm PDT April 14, 2006

SAN DIEGO -- There's a travel warning out for people heading to northern Baja.

The advisory was issued by a local group with ties to tourism in Mexico.

The group is called Baja Safari Mexico Club.

For decades, members have been recommending travel to places such as Tijuana, Rosarito and all of Mexico.

But the recent kidnappings and ongoing violence south of the border are changing their minds.

For decades the turnstiles at the border have been turning people onto a horseback ride on a Baja beach, a night at a club or a shopping spree.

"We advise against travel to Baja north," said Mike Overcast, with Baja Safari Mexico Club.

Overcast said it's time visitors turn their back on northern Baja.

Recent kidnappings of a businessman in Bonita, a cab driver in south San Diego and other Americans doing business in Tijuana have become the final straw.

"Because of all the rash of kidnappings (and) ongoing crime occurring in Tijuana over many years, we're recommending avoiding travel through the spring to northern Baja California -- in particular Tijuana," said Overcast.

Overcast and his group will stop promoting travel into northern Baja until the Mexican government cracks down on crime aimed at Americans.

The FBI, on the other hand, said a travel boycott is an overreaction.

"No matter what country they're standing in, you should be aware of your surroundings," said Jan Caldwell, with the FBI.

Caldwell said the FBI is working with law enforcement south of the border to crack down on kidnappings in Baja and Mexico.

Tourism officials in Baja said Americans are more than safe.

They said they have taken extra measures to protect visitors. Agencies such as the tourism police are in place solely to protect tourists.
