"Anchor babies" cost U.S. plenty

Mexican women are flocking to U.S. border hospitals to save money and gain pseudo citizenship, and it is costing American taxpayers plenty.

In Mexico a child birth costs about $1,000. If a Mexican mom-to-be can sneak across the border and give birth in an American hospital, American taxpayers pay the bill. In addition to free medical care, under the present interpretation of the 14th Amendment, the mother of the "anchor baby" has assured U.S. citizenship for the child and has insured that she will not be sent back to Mexico because that would break up the family of an American citizen.

Hospitals in Houston estimate that approximately 70 percent of the babies born last year were "anchor babies." Star County Texas is having to increase taxes 25 percent in order to pay for the welfare births.

It is probable that many small and medium size towns near the Mexican border will lose their hospitals because they can no longer afford the influx from the south.

Fortunately there is a clause in the 14th Amendment that allows Congress to change the status of "anchor babies" without going though the full cumbersome Constitutional Amendment apparatus.

This loophole needs to be changed immediately.
