    FRANKFORT --
Jon Larson, a Lexington lawyer who ran last year in the Republican primary for attorney general, is running for the 6th Congressional District on, among other issues, a platform related to immigration.

But, unlike many Republicans who have publicly urged tighter restrictions and actions against illegal immigrants, Larson said he wants to avoid deportation and urge the government to "offer amnesty."

"As a true conservative, an anti-bureaucrat, valuing financial welfare for other Americans, I must state the obvious: There is no realistic way to detain and deport more than seven million undocumented Hispanic workers and their dependents," Larson wrote in a five-page candidacy statement paper provided to the Herald-Leader.

He described immigration laws as a "discouraging maze" and said deporting illegal immigrants would deprive the economy of millions of workers.

Larson faces Tony McCurdy in the May 20 Republican primary election. McCurdy already has said that one of his major platforms is tightening immigration laws and strengthening border security. The filing deadline is Jan. 29.

Larson, a former Army officer, advocated for a reform of the criminal justice system with an eye toward saving money on a crumbling prison system during the Republican attorney general primary last spring.

The 6th district covers 14 Central Kentucky counties, including Fayette. U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Versailles, has represented the district since February 2004. He has yet to file papers with the state board of elections.

There is a Republican candidate in the Sixth District who will enforce our immigration laws and is strongly against amnesty. His name is Tony McCurdy. Website: www.mccurdyforcongress.com.

Here is an article about him from the same paper:

Gary Anthony McCurdy is running for Congress.

He’s filed his paperwork with the Board of Elections. He’s started a campaign Web site, www.mccurdyforcongress.com. And he’s made enforcement of U.S. immigration laws a centerpiece of his platform.

The only problem is that he starts the race with a disadvantage candidates rarely face: he can’t even vote for himself.

    McCurdy, who goes by “Tonyâ€
