An unlicensed driver accused of backing a minivan into a San Rafael woman was charged with felony hit-and-run Wednesday as the woman remained in serious condition.
Miguel Paz-Calderon, 19, of San Rafael could face up to three years in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Linda Witong.
Paz-Calderon was also arraigned Wednesday on charges of driving without a license and failure to provide proof of insurance, Witong said.
The incident occurred at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a parking garage on Canal Street in San Rafael. Witnesses told police that a man backed a minivan into the woman, pinned her between the rear bumper and a concrete pillar, and then fled the scene.
Witnesses chased Paz-Calderon, found him hiding under tree and detained him until officers arrived, police said.
The woman, identified as 31-year-old Trilica Moreno, was taken to Marin General Hospital with severe internal injuries, police said. She remained at the hospital Wednesday night in "stable but still serious" condition, a nursing supervisor said.
Paz-Calderon is being detained without bail on a federal immigration hold. A plea hearing is pending.
