Another Try for E-Verify in Yakima

Another Try for E-Verify in Yakima

By David Mance. Published Monday, June 6th, 2011

Yakima city leaders will reconsider using a federal employment verification program that was shot down last year over concerns of racism.

Council member Dave Ettl wants the city to use the "E-Verify" program. It's used to electronically verify if a person can legally work in the United states. If approved, any contractor doing work for the city would have to use E-Verify.

Ettl says he's worked to calm those who are concerned that e-verify is racist.

"I worked with those guys on the gang free initiative now, they know that that's not my motivation, that that's not what I'm about, so hopefully some of that fear of that will come off, and it'll be seen for what it is, which is just an employment issue," says Ettl.

The Yakima City Council may decide whether to adopt the use of e-verify tomorrow night.

How is E-verify possibly racist? The employer just E-verifies all new hires, regardless of race or ethnicity. If someone cries E-verify is racist, they just don't want enforcement.
