Online Poll: Local laws for illegal immigration?

As debate continues nationwide on what to do about illegal immigration, several communities across the country have taken steps of their own to combat the problem.

For example, Valley Park, Mo., enacted an ordinance last summer to fine landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and deny city contracts to businesses that hire illegal aliens. Similar ordinances have been adopted in Hazelton, Pa., and Cherokee County, Ga. In Suffolk County, N.Y., Beaudort County, S.C. and Pickens County, S.C., ordinances have been adopted requiring businesses to attest they aren’t hiring illegal aliens and forfeiting county business with any that do.

There are federal court challenges pending on some of these measures as well as other local regulations regarding illegal immigrants. Opponents contend immigration is solely a federal purview, and tat only Congress can enact immigration legislation. Proponents say the federal government is abdicating its role in controlling illegal immigration and local communities should be able to police the problem as it affects them.

    Today’s Online Poll question is:

    • Should local governments be able to enact their own regulations to control illegal immigration in their communities?

Online Poll supports local immigration laws
Respondents say somebody needs to control illegal immigrants

People responding to the latest Baxter Bulletin Online Poll say somebody needs to do something about illegal immigration, and if the federal government doesn’t do its job, then local governments should take care of it.

Around the country, several municipalities and counties have adopted ordinances prohibiting landlords from renting to illegal aliens and barring businesses that hire illegal immigrants from receiving local government contracts. Some are being challenged in federal court.

A total of 753 votes were cast in response to the Online Poll question: Should local governments be able to enact their own regulations to control illegal immigration in their communities?

Of those, an overwhelming 85.3 percent said yes, local governments should be able to enact their own regulations. Only 14.7 percent disagreed.

Online Poll: Let local governments enact immigration rules

People responding to the latest Baxter Bulletin Online Poll say somebody needs to do something about illegal immigration, and if the federal government doesn't do its job, then local governments should take care of it.

Around the country, several municipalities and counties have adopted ordinances prohibiting landlords from renting to illegal aliens and barring businesses that hire illegal immigrants from receiving local government contracts. Some are being challenged in federal court.

Of those, an overwhelming 85.3 percent said yes, local governments should be able to enact their own regulations. Only 14.7 percent disagreed.

Here are some of the comments from those taking part in the Online Poll.

"As Americans from every community in this nation, we must stop illegal alien migration with whatever tools afforded us. We must stop the massive flow, now at 20 million and expected to double within a decade or two. Mexico laughs at us while it drains us of $20 billion annually. It laughs as we pay for its baby births, education of its children, room and board for its criminals and breakdown of our medical, educational systems and language. It laughs as it steals our jobs and degrades wages for Americans from the poor to the middle class. This is a modern day invasion. We either stop it, or it will destroy the viability and community of the United States. Additionally, current immigration growth rates add 100 million people to this country by 2040. That's 33 years folks."

"The reality of the situation is that there are over 900,000 local and state law enforcement officers in the United States. There are only 5,000 INA internal immigration enforcement officers. Unless local law enforcement is active in immigration enforcement, which they are legally enabled to do, we don't have a prayer of ever controlling this problem."

"Problem will be, how do you prove you are not an illegal alien? We have no national ID system. I have friends who are here illegally that have a drivers license and through that were able to register to vote. And those illegals have voted. And they have lived right here in Mountain Home."

"Bush and his partners in amnesty are determined to get as many of these illegals here as they possibly can, and they will not be deterred. It's a done deal. Sad but true."

"If the federal government is not fast enough to enact laws regarding the control and enforcement of our present immigration laws, then I am for the local and state government to be able to enact laws on immigration affecting them. ... It is at the work place, government offices and banks where it is possible to identify who is the illegal immigrant. ... I do not have much medical, dental and vision coverage. I pay a certain amount to see a doctor and pay an amount for prescription, vision and dental coverage, while the illegal immigrant gets all these free."

"Each citizen has to get into the act for proper control. If we 'cheat' on who we hire, the problem is escalated. The blame falls on each and every one of us, but I feel the business world and our own governments should absorb most of the blame."

"Someone needs to enforce it. There is no more Department of Immigration, and the federal government has never done the job right."

"Forty-seven percent of all Americans think that immigration is a serious problem. The other 53 percent said, 'No hablo inglés'."

Yes, I am in favor of local laws for illegal immigration. Our federal government has dropped the ball, and that neglect is costing the good ole American taxpayers a fortune. There is a big problem when our U.S. government provides benefits to illegals and deny them to those who have paid taxes to support our government for all these years."

"I understand the trepidation of those who want illegal aliens controlled locally. And, if properly applied, I'll back every one of them. But, how do you tell who is illegal or, for that matter, alien? If I were stopped and asked to prove I was born in the U.S., I am not sure I could. If my name was Garcia, and I looked like I might be Mexican, could I prove without being arrested that I was born in the U.S.? There has to be a way we can do that in the future, perhaps national IDs, or a chip implant at birth. Damn, that sounds almost Nazi doesn't it?"

"As it appears that our federal lawmakers are becoming increasingly more in the pockets of big money and refusing to listen to their constituents, they leave little choice but for the public to take action. The American public and majority are being placed in a condition of a voiceless state. Speak up Americans, while you still can."

"Congress (politicians) will not address the immigration problems as they are afraid of losing votes. Therefore, the local governments need to make ordinances to protect their cities from becoming a disaster like there is in California. We just moved from there, and my hometown is now over 70 percent immigrants, and that is not counting the illegal ones. The local government is afraid to do anything as they will be called racists. The crime is out of control, and the city and county are broke from providing free services. The employers get cheap labor, and they live in luxury homes away from the city and crime. It is out of control."

Step #1: Put employers in jail with an attached fine. If no one will hire them, they won't come.

Step #2: Step #1 will never be inforced Move to step #3

Step #3: Invade Mexico!! They want to be here anyway. The whole thing would last about 24 hrs.

Joking aside, this illegal immigration is a Plague on our country. It cost billions of taxpayers $$. That is just the tip of the iceberg.

I am just tired of the woes of these people. They should fight for a better life in Mexico. I just don't care anymore. No sympathy. Look what having a weak stance on this issue has caused thus far. America is not equipped to handle much more of this invasion. Americans have already taken up watching the border on their own. We are a tolerant and caring nation. However, the tolerance will erode. People will rise up and take matters into their own hands. Many Americans are at their breaking point. No tolerance for employers who hire them. That is a good start.

Having resided in South Texas I can tell you the sad truth is that many times this is really the case, but we all as the two nations can take responcibility for it. Taking the law into ones' own hands though is never wise.

Many of the original colonist from Spain were people fleeing from the Inquisition. 86 sailor and officers on the Nina, Pina and Santa Maria were Jewish ethnically and many think Columbus himself was a Jew by birth that converted. This Inquisition unfortunately followed them to Mexico and many fled north into what is now the Southhwest of the United States. ALIYAH THE LAST EXODUS by Dr. Dell Sanchez of San Antonio is a very eye opening book as to the religious and ethic strife that force many Mexican people to flee to our country that is seldom taught in our public schools. I read the facts I quoted above in the English Edition of Mexican History Book in the Orange Grove Texas Public School Library. In 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue all the Jews were told to get out of Spain by Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand. So now you at least know some of the rest of the story....

Forward to modern times we have the econimic disparity between the very rich and the very poor that has been a hallmark of Mexico, Central and South America then people of course want the freedom in the United States but come from a background many times when they were constantly in the survival mode and did whatever to survive.

Many times in South Texas when you try to employ people they will not give you their Social Security numbers and the wealthy ranchers hire them and even house them. This in my opinion is why President George W Bush is for granting amnesty to illegals.

The Democrats on the other hand see the poor and down trodden status these people have fled from in their own country and want to help them, but many of the leaders of the party are wealthy too and have thier own profit motives for want to grant amnesty. Under this thin venire of charity the leaders of the party profit from this situation.

The illegal drug transport problem and wide spread illegal drug use by many US families causes us all to be culpible and responcible for this situation since many of these illegals bring contraband with them across the border to have a nest egg to get started with that many times becomes the family business for generations laundered through some "legitimate" business like construction, remodeling, hair shops etc...

So we as the two nations must get honest and find a real solution to our problems like; How can Mexico empower their own citizens without poluting their environment at the cost of millions of Mexican lives by American Industry?

    Nativeam,

I am so sorry about the loss of your wife. I have no sympathy for illegals. I use to work for U.S. INS, I quit after a few years. The organization is corrupt and filled with incompetence.

I think we should put about 1,000 US Army recruiting stations on the border. We could slap some camo on them and ship them off to Iraq to fight. After a 12 month deployment, if and when they get back, then we could make them citizens. Just an Idea

My wife was killed in an auto wreck caused by 5 illegals. She was hit head on. The local law in west Texas didn't know what their options were concerning illegals, so they were supposedly deported. Two weeks later my brother in law comes face to face with them in a convenience store. He punched the one that was driving, the cops came and arrested my brother in law. He was sentenced to 1 year in jail.
Just where in the hell are we living? Our own government is prejudice against US citizens. You call this a just and democratic government? We have no representation, but the Mexicans do!!!!
