Ariz. deputies arrest 12 migrants traveling in pickup

Twelve suspected undocumented immigrants were arrested after a pickup carrying 13 people, including six found hiding in the truck's bed, was pulled over on Interstate 17 in northern Arizona, authorities said.

The driver, who told Yavapai County deputies that he did not have a license and could not speak English well, fled across freeway lanes as the truck was searched Wednesday afternoon south of Cordes Junction, said Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. He was not located.

The truck with a fully enclosed bed was stopped because of issues with the vehicle registration as well as a possible equipment violation, D'Evelyn said.

Six people were found under the bed cover, which was apparently propped open with a couple of bricks and held down by a belt.
Deputies contacted officials from Immigrations and Custom Enforcement, who determined that all of the occupants, including three juveniles, were in the country illegally, D'Evelyn said.
All 12 were detained and taken to the Camp Verde Jail pending transfer to federal custody.

During a follow-up investigation, deputies learned that three of the immigrants apparently called Brazil their home country. They said they decided to enter the United State at the Mexico border.
