Ariz. immigration law pushes workers underground

Ariz. immigration law pushes workers underground

Arizona’s 2007 law designed to squeeze illegal immigrants from the workplace has reduced the illegal immigrant population and the number of illegal immigrants in wage and salary jobs. But it has also resulted in many workers simply going underground and receiving money either under the table or as contract workers, according to a new study by the Public Policy Institute of California.

The report warns that the trend could result in negative societal and economic repercussions.

There was a decline of about 56,000 wage and salary workers in the state among less-educated Hispanic non-citizens, according to the report. At the same time, self-employment in this group increased by 8 percentage points, or about 25,000 workers.

The report also found that the population of unauthorized immigrants of working age fell by about 17 percent, or about 92,000 people, in Arizona from 2008 to 2009.

As construction has been one of the biggest magnets bringing illegals to the U.S., sweeps of building sites should be occurring in every state on a regular basis. Many of these illegals are running their own crews and paying cash under the table.

Law Enforcement needs to use the issuing of building permits as a trigger to look into specific building sites for illegals. Also more sweeps of day labor sites need to be done over and over till they are rooted out and deported. Local Law enforcement knows where building, landscaping and construction is being done. Regular patrols will show where trucks and especially outdoor work is taking place. That should be the key to initiate a sweep.
