Napolitano to be named as homeland security pick Monday

    by Associated Press

A Democratic official says President-elect Barack Obama plans to name his picks for U.N. ambassador, attorney general and homeland security secretary at a news conference Monday.

Obama has settled on Susan Rice, his campaign foreign policy adviser, for the U.N. post. For attorney general, the pick is Eric Holder, who helped run Obama's vice presidential search. At the Homeland Security Department, it's Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Those names had been discussed before for those jobs. But a Democratic official said Sunday that Obama will make the three announcements official - along with Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state and members of national security team - Monday in Chicago.

The official spoke on a condition of anonymity because the announcements were not authorized for public release.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama on Monday will officially introduce Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as his nominee for secretary of homeland security and Eric Holder for the post of attorney general, according to a Democrat familiar with the transition team's work.

Napolitano's record in Arizona, where she has been the U.S. attorney and the state's attorney general, suggests she is willing to be a tough law enforcer. Her state has a 376-mile border with Mexico, and she was the first governor to call for stationing the National Guard on the border.

But Napolitano, 51, also has shown a shrewd instinct for finding her way through the minefield of Immigration politics in a state where the battle lines were well-drawn. She took a centrist position, supporting strong steps to prevent new immigrants from coming to Arizona, while opposing most measures that would punish immigrants living there.

Napolitano has not been a backer of the border fence currently under construction.

But in a speech last year, she outlined a series of measures to control Immigration, including an improved national employer verification system that would make use of Social Security data.

Holder, 57, would be the nation's first African-American attorney general.

He became the first African-American to serve as deputy attorney general in 1997, in the Clinton administration, and as acting attorney general, in the first few weeks of the Bush administration. He also has been a Superior Court judge in Washington, D.C., and the top prosecutor in the high-profile U.S. attorney's office in the capital.
