Not only does illegal immigration greatly contribute to California’s increasing budget deficit and high unemployment rate, according to Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, but it depresses wages throughout minority communities and is largely responsible for economic strife in African-American populations.

In 2007, the Public Policy Institute of California published a report showing that between the years 1960 and 2004, the inflow of immigrants did nothing to affect the employment opportunities of natives. The study also found very small effects of immigration on the wages of the average American worker. In fact, in California, immigration between 1990 and 2004 caused a 4 percent real wage increase for the average native-born worker.

From that study: "These findings derive from empirical analyses showing that immigrant workers often serve as complements to native workers rather than as their direct competitors for jobs, thereby increasing total economic output. Native workers benefit because they are able to specialize in more productive work. The results are consistent with other national-level research showing that immigrants have little if any effect on the wages of low-skilled natives and benefit high-skilled natives."

I guess that someone forgot to tell the author, Giovanni Peri, that immigrants were displacing Americans in restaurants, hotels, packing plants, and the construction industry I wonder what he would discover now, as Americans scramble for jobs at Ranchers Markets and Pei Wei and Chipotle restaurants.
