NOGALES, AZ - Border Patrol agents recently stopped nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition from being smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico, authorities said.

According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release, Nogales Station Border Patrol agents responded to reports Sunday of three suspicious people dressed in black near the International Boundary Fence and came across one subject fitting the description running south. At the same time, a remote surveillance system picked up two other subjects heading south over the border.

The subject dropped three backpacks where agents found 4,951 rounds of 9mm and 500 rounds of .40-caliber pistol ammunition. The ammunition was seized and transported to the Nogales Border Patrol Station.

Authorities say as a result of the effectiveness of southbound inspections at the ports of entry, criminal organizations have had to create and use alternate methods to smuggle contraband into Mexico.

The Border Patrol says it relies on the public to assist and anyone seeing suspicious activity is urged to report it by calling 1-877-872-7435. Callers will remain anonymous.
