MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- With more and more illegal aliens finding their way into area county jails, Marshall County is getting a little help from the federal government in defraying the cost of housing them.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Department has received a nearly $3,000 grant from the state criminal alien assistance program.

Sheriff Scott Walls says while it doesn't cover all the cost of housing illegals, it does help relieve some burden for area taxpayers.

"It's an important factor to obtain this money every year. Only five agencies in Alabama got the grant this year, and we're the only agency that doesn't house federal inmates," said Sheriff Walls.

Sheriff Walls estimates they house approximately thirty illegals daily that qualify each year.
