Representatives with the State Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation are traveling the state discussing the Illegal Immigration Reform Act.

Governor Mark Sanford signed the act into law in 2008.

It requires all employers to verify the legal status of new employees and remove from their payrolls any worker who is not legally in this country and authorized to work.

Private employers who employ fewer than 100 people have until July 1 to comply with the law. The penalty for not complying is a fine and the possibility of losing the right to operate your business. "We want to get the word out because we don't want employers to be surprised because we will be doing audits after July 1 at random across the state," said Jim Knight, SC LLR.
