Congress Needs To Take Illegal Immigration More Seriously

Congress Needs To Approach Illegal Immigration More Seriously: Stand Up And Fight
By Debra Wilson on January 7, 2011, 6:52 am

A new year is here and we are still facing the same old illegal alien invasion and secure our borders issues. Seems as if our government is not listing to us. However, they did have enough backbone to say no to the DREAM Act, which causes a great deal of discussion. I would like to comment on three of the problems our country is facing.

    Washington’s Inaction
Conservative local lawmakers have consistently pointed to Washington’s inaction on immigration enforcement when passing new anti-immigrant laws. But ironically, the shift is driven largely by Washington’s active devolution of immigration enforcement to state and local law enforcement over the past several years. The Obama administration has continued that trend. The result is that the country is now covered in a lattice work of increasingly hostile localized laws and practices that are fueling an intensifying confrontation between immigrant rights advocates and anti-immigrant policy makers in state and local governments.

Attraction To Coming To The U.S. Without Papers
But the idea of U.S.-born children getting all the rights of American citizenship surely must add to the attraction of coming to the United States without papers. Deported illegal immigrants with U.S.-born children often charge American authorities with breaking up their families. (Of course, their children could return with them to their home countries.) Such accusations add to the general impression that birthright citizenship is a loophole for illegal immigration.

    Refugee And Asylum Law
Refugee and asylum law is overdue for reform. It has strayed far from its original and altruistic intent of offering protection to those who face a credible fear of persecution at the hands of their governments. The reforms that are truly needed are ones that provide a more rational allocation of resources in support of refugees and the restoration of an asylum policy to provide protection for people who would qualify as refugees.
