They should have exempted Citizens and Naturalized Citizens from this law.
They are exempt. This law has nothing to do with legal citizens. It's about those who are in the country illegally.
The article did not state that they are exempt. It (the article) is written so that it looks like the law applies to everyone.
I just saw that at the end of the first post. If that's true, then you have a point.
Here is the section of AZ SB 1070 that applies to illegal aliens soliciting work, etc. It only applies to people in our country illegally. There is a provision that prohibits anyone from impeding traffic to solicit work or enter a vehicle, but the specific restriction to soliciting and accepting work anywhere applies only to illegal aliens.

1 Sec. 5. Title 13, chapter 29, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by
2 adding sections 13-2928 and 13-2929, to read:
3 13-2928. Unlawful stopping to hire and pick up passengers for
4 work; unlawful application, solicitation or
    5 employment; classification; definitions
6 A. IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR AN OCCUPANT OF A MOTOR VEHICLE THAT IS STOPPED

8 PASSENGERS FOR WORK AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION IF THE MOTOR VEHICLE BLOCKS OR
9 IMPEDES THE NORMAL MOVEMENT OF TRAFFIC.
10 B. IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR A PERSON TO ENTER A MOTOR VEHICLE THAT IS
11 STOPPED ON A STREET, ROADWAY OR HIGHWAY IN ORDER TO BE HIRED BY AN OCCUPANT
12 OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE AND TO BE TRANSPORTED TO WORK AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION IF
13 THE MOTOR VEHICLE BLOCKS OR IMPEDES THE NORMAL MOVEMENT OF TRAFFIC.
14 C. IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR A PERSON WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED

    18 D. A VIOLATION OF THIS SECTION IS A CLASS 1 MISDEMEANOR.
19 E. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION:
20 1. "SOLICIT" MEANS VERBAL OR NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION BY A GESTURE OR A
21 NOD THAT WOULD INDICATE TO A REASONABLE PERSON THAT A PERSON IS WILLING TO BE

23 2. "UNAUTHORIZED ALIEN" MEANS AN ALIEN WHO DOES NOT HAVE THE LEGAL
24 RIGHT OR AUTHORIZATION UNDER FEDERAL LAW TO WORK IN THE UNITED STATES AS

26 13-2929. Unlawful transporting, moving, concealing, harboring

34 UNITED STATES IN VIOLATION OF LAW.
Here is a link to the entire bill. Worth the time reading it. It's a very good well-thought out piece of legislation. Many Many Kudos to the drafters as well as those who voted for it.

Every state in the Union with even an ounce of self-respect for itself or a thimble-full of concern for its citizens will copy this bill, adjust it to apply to their state and pass it post haste.

Arizona immigration law would be among nation's strictest

Arizona is moving ahead with anti-illegal-immigrant legislation widely considered among the most stringent in the nation. It would hand the police broad power under state law to check the legal status of people they reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants.

    By Seattle Times news services

Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce sponsored law.

Arizona is moving ahead with anti-illegal-immigrant legislation widely considered among the most stringent in the nation. It would hand the police broad power under state law to check the legal status of people they reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants.

The legislation was approved by Arizona's House on Tuesday and is heading back to the Senate, which is expected to pass it and send it to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican. She is expected to sign it.

The police would be authorized to arrest immigrants unable to show documents allowing them to be in the country and the legislation would leave drivers open to sanctions, in some cases for knowingly transporting an illegal immigrant, even a relative.

Immigrants unable to produce documents showing they are allowed to be in the United States could be arrested, jailed for up to six months and fined $2,500.

Currently, officers can inquire about someone's immigration status only if the person is a suspect in another crime. The bill would allow officers to avoid the immigration issue if it would be impractical or hinder another investigation.

The bill also would allow citizens to sue to compel police agencies to comply with the law, and no city or agency could formulate a policy directing its workers to ignore the law, a provision that advocates said prevents so-called sanctuary orders that police not inquire about people's immigration status.

The bill cements the position of Arizona, whose border with Mexico is the most popular point of entry for illegal immigrants into the United States, as the state most aggressively using its own laws to fight illegal immigration.

In 2006 the state passed a law that would dissolve companies with a pattern of hiring illegal immigrants. Last year it made it a crime for a government worker to give improper benefits to an illegal immigrant.

Advocates for immigrants described the bill as a recipe for racial and ethnic profiling that is ripe for costly constitutional challenges.

It is "the most anti-immigrant legislation the country has seen in a generation," said Chris Newman, legal director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

Muzaffar Christi, a lawyer and policy analyst at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute in Washington, said Arizona would be the first state to allow local police to determine a person's immigration status based solely on their "reasonable suspicion" that they are in the country illegally. No other state, he added, makes it a state crime not to carry an alien registration card or other immigration document, though federal law requires legal immigrants to do so.

He said the Arizona law could face legal challenges. "How can you 'reasonably believe' someone is an undocumented immigrant if you are a local cop?" he said.

The chief sponsor of the legislation, state Sen. Russell Pearce, said he hoped the legislation, and other measures, would send the message to illegal immigrants that they were not welcome in Arizona. "That absolutely is what we are doing here," he said.

He brushed aside concerns that immigrants would not cooperate with police investigations or report crime, noting that the law would allow officers not to ask about immigration status if it would hinder an investigation.

Immigration remains a potent issue in Arizona; during debate over the bill Tuesday, a few legislators invoked the killing of a rancher at the border that the police theorized was related to smuggling.

Gov. Brewer's campaign Web site features pictures of razor wire on a border fence, and she has sought to play up her toughness on immigration as she prepares for a challenge to a full term from candidates considered to be to the right of her.

Some Republicans called the bill flawed and promised to fix it later, but they supported it as a step forward.

"This is not a comprehensive solution," Kirk Adams, a Republican and the speaker of the House, said before casting his vote for it. "That's not going to occur until the federal government takes up its responsibility to protect Arizona. But that doesn't mean we should wait until then."

So the House version has to go back to the Senate for another vote and then it will go to the Governor's Office. She's expected to sign it when it comes back out of the Senate.

    God Bless You, Arizona.

Arizona immigration measure passed, but not law yet

by Alia Beard Rau and Ginger Rough - Apr. 15, 2010 12:00 AM
    The Arizona Republic

Contrary to mistaken reports from radio, television and advocates on both sides of the issue, Arizona does not yet have a new immigration law.

And the one being proposed has not yet gone to the governor for her signature.

Senate Bill 1070 would, among other things, make it a state crime to be in the country illegally and require police to check the immigration status of individuals. It passed the House of Representatives
on Tuesday but still needs a final vote from the full Senate on the changes the House added before being passed along to Gov. Jan Brewer.

No hearings or votes have yet been scheduled on the bill. Mike Philipsen, spokesman for the Senate Republicans, said it may happen early next week.

Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said the governor has not commented on this particular bill yet but "has a strong and consistent track record of supporting responsible immigration-enforcement measures."

As Secretary of State, Brewer advocated for Prop. 200, a provision that requires proof of identification to vote and proof of citizenship to register to vote
, Senseman said. Brewer pushed for the measure in 2004, and then "vigorously fought legal battles to successfully defend its provisions," he said.

The lawsuits were resolved in favor of her position in 2008, he added.

More recently, in 2009, Brewer worked with the Arizona Department of Economic Security to ensure that funds the state spent on social-welfare programs only went to those who were eligible under the law, Senseman said.

    ________________

Looks like the AZ Senate will pass the revised version next week so perhaps by the end of the month, Governor Brewer will sign this sweet puppy into law.

    Thank you builditnow.

It's a good well-written law, isn't it? It should easily stand up in the courts all the way to the US Supreme Court is need be.

Just sent Gov Brewer a letter of support and thanked her in advance for her strong leadership. Told her I hope other states follow suit (like mine).

That is plain stupid. I never got offended when I had to show my birth cedrtificate to get a drivers license. Or show my drivers license when using a credit card or cashing a check. EVERYONE HAS TO SHOW A FORM OF LEGAL ID when asked. It has nothing to do with racial profiling. The bottom line is, if you are not in the counry LEGALLY, you will finally be caught and deported. I hope this spreads to all the other states. THANK YOU ARIZONA!

That's a great video and boy howdy did Russell Pearce do a good job standing up against these silly arguments from the media guy? YES HE DID!

Great Job, Senator Pearce. And of course, he was right, the House did pass the bill, it's back in the Senate to approve the amendments the House added it to, he has the votes, it will pass and Jan Brewer will sign it into law.

What a great job Arizona is doing and every state in the country needs to get in line and follow their outstanding example of leadership to solve this problem. Did you hear the financial results of the Arizona Proposition 200? It has already saved Arizona $350 million just in K-12 since Brewer became Governor and enforced it. As you know Napolitano refused to do so during her term as Governor or the savings would be even greater.
