SEGUIN – Details are still sketchy about a late night traffic stop on Interstate 10 that uncovered a large cache of semi-automatic weapons bound for destinations unknown.

Guadalupe County sheriff's deputies found 67 semi-automatic weapons in a hidden compartment of the small trailer, Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke said Monday.

An officer patrolling the road just west of town late Thursday night noticed that the trailer, loaded with plywood and sheetrock and heading toward San Antonio, didn't have a license plate. He pulled the vehicle over.

During a roadside conversation, the deputy noticed inconsistencies in the driver's story, Zwicke said. The deputy requested and received permission from the driver to search the trailer, resulting in the discovery of the weapons.

Investigators believe the trip originated in the Houston area, Zwicke said, but the final destination of the weapons isn't known.

Everything was confiscated, but the driver remains free.

Zwicke was reluctant to reveal additional details.

"We're still investigating this," he said. "We're trying to find out what's going on."
