Ark. House panel refuses to take up immigration bill

    By The Associated Press

An Arkansas House committee has refused to take up a bill to require illegal immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition at Arkansas’ public colleges and universities.

Members of the House Education Committee on Tuesday voted against considering the bill that would require students to have U.S. citizenship or lawful presence in the country in order to qualify for in-state tuition.

The vote was five in favor of taking up the bill — nine against.

The bill remains tabled in the committee. It’s sponsored by Republican Reps. Jon Woods of Springdale and Justin Harris of West Fork.

The House and the Senate convened for the 88th General Assembly this year.

You can watch everything that happens in the House of Representatives on their live stream from the Capitol. Arkansas' House shelled out more than $375,000 to equip four committee rooms with cameras and hardware.

You can also keep up with everything in the Arkansas Senate with their website.

Also, on the 88th General Assembly website, you can keep track of all the bills filed and proposed and find a list of all your Arkansas legislators.
