Sheriff Joe Arpaio is being sued after admitting that he is targeting illegal immigrants during his crime sweeps. Five people and the Latino community-based coalition called Somos America are suing Arpaio charging that they or their members were unlawfully stopped and mistreated by law enforcement because they are Latino. The class action lawsuit charges that the policies and practices of Arpaio and the county are discriminatory.

Arpaio's sweeps are targeted in lawsuit

Associated Press
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration and crime sweeps are being targeted in a lawsuit that alleges his deputies have racially profiled Hispanics.
Civil groups backing the lawsuit say in court papers filed Wednesday that Arpaio's officers have used unfounded traffic stops and baseless arrests to target Hispanics for inquiries about their immigration status.
Arpaio defends the patrols as crime suppression efforts and says his deputies don't racially profile Hispanics.
His crackdowns in Phoenix, Guadalupe, Mesa and other cities have drawn complaints of racial profiling.
The sweep allegations were added to a lawsuit that already alleged a Mexican man in the country legally was unnecessarily detained by a deputy investigating his immigration status.

I'm sorry but when the area has a large hispanic community it's hard to cry being targeted when it's the majority of what's there. That's like me living in a major white area crying about being targeted because more whites than any other race gets busted. Hint....that's why you learn to "blend in" in a diverse area instead of taking over entire towns.

ACLU sues Arpaio over racial profiling
Several groups have filed a class action lawsuit alleging Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio discriminates against Latinos in his crime-suppression sweeps.
The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Arizona, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Steptoe & Johnson LLP filed suit on behalf of five individuals and Somos America, a Latino community-based coalition.
"Sheriff Arpaio does not have the right to profile people because they look Latino regardless of their immigration status," said ACLU of Arizona Legal Director Dan Pochoda. "His job is to uphold the law, not violate people's rights."
Plaintiff Manuel Nieto Jr. said he was stopped and detained in front of his family's auto repair shop after police heard him listening to music in Spanish.
"It was very humiliating to be handcuffed in front of my family's business, in front of customers and neighbors," said Nieto, who is a U.S. citizen. "It's not a crime to be Latino or listen to a Spanish-language radio station, but you wouldn't know that by the way Sheriff Joe and his posse treat people."
Capt. Paul Chagolla said the sheriff's office does not racial profile, and that the lawsuit won't change the way they do business.
"Sherriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sherriff's Office will continue to do its work, continue to complete its job," he said.
The lawsuit builds upon a complaint filed last December.

If Sheriff Joe was racial profiling he would be stopping at least 150 people a day, infact he could just sit in one spot all day and just pick out the next person who happens by!

In addition, how can you "target" latinos in a latino area?!?! I don't get it? Someone has to be calling the Sheriff with PROOF of criminals in the area, don't you think?

Why in the world would an American citizen who is of hispanic ethnicity be concerned if illegal invaders, some of which may also be hispanic are targeted for arrest and removal. This isn't about being hispanic, it's about being in this country illegally!
