Someday we will build a monument and a statue to commemorate Sheriff Joe Arpaio as a great American hero equivalent to a modern Davy Crockett!

Bermudez: Arpaio "Was Our Hero," Now He's Executioner
    March 24th, 2008 @ 7:10am
by Jim Cross and Mike Sauceda/KTAR

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio conducted more crime suppression sweeps over the weekend near 36th Street and Thomas.

The sheriff said he had been asked to do the sweeps by local business people.

"A total of 10 hours our force has arrested 55 people. Out of the 55, 37 were illegal," he said of the Friday and Saturday arrests on KTAR's The Jay Lawrence Show.

He said he's going to do more crime suppression near the work center at 25th Street and Bell Road sometime this week, but won't pin down the date.

Immigrant rights activist Elias Bermudez says the sheriff's job is not to arrest illegal immigrants, it's to arrest criminals.

"He arrested a mother and a child yesterday. What crime did she commit? She had a broken windshield. He arrested a pregnant lady, 8 months pregnant."

Bermudez told the sheriff on The Jay Lawrence Show, he would willingly have himself arrested in the place of the pregnant woman. "Arrest me and I'll stand in for her, will you do that?"

The sheriff declined that offer. "No of course not . . . This is getting over dramatic. We'll take care of her. She violated the law."

Bermudez said the sheriff is creating a terrifying police state. "Because people were afraid to come out and shop and go to the store and go to the laundromat. I'm so sad, because he was our hero. Now he's our executioner..

Arpaio responded to criticism from Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, who said Arpaio did not notify him of the sweep. "Since when do I have to call a politician? So I come in here, he knew it - if he read the papers - I did notify the local commander of the precinct. They did know we were here."

    Good Prees

"Ms. Schwartz approached him as he sat in his vehicle and learned that his name was Israel Salenas and that he, too, was an illegal immigrant. Before the deputies instructed her to step away, she advised Mr. Salenas to refuse to answer any questions regarding his residency status"

Is Ms. Schwartz an attorney? That sound like a crime, of hinder or obstructing.
I hope Hero Joe gets some good press, seem like eveyone there is looking for the sop story, and again, what part of illegal don't they understand.

Sheriff Arpaio protestors become afraid for their safety
    Reported by: Christina Boomer
    Last Update: 3/28 11:29 pm

On Friday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s crime suppression operation ended earlier than normal after a passionate display by both supporters and protestors got tense.

Two people were arrested. A Hispanic man was charged with disorderly conduct. Also charged was a white man who showed up to the demonstration with a loaded shotgun.

Chants, music, and swearing quickly escalated into intense stand-offs. At one point a fight nearly broke out with both sides alleging that the other side was throwing water bottles and trash across a row of barricades that separated them.

Protest organizers were so worried for the safety of the people congregated that they asked them to go home. Once the protestors left, Sheriff Joe Arpaio supporters also cleared the area. Shortly after that, deputies packed up and drove away.

As for the Operation itself, MCSO says it arrested more than 30 people. Of them, 16 are believed to have entered the country illegally. MCSO says, of those, one was from Honduras, one was Guatemalan, one from The Federated States of Micronesia, an Island of Guam, and the rest were Mexican Nationals.
