Gordon to Arpaio: Let's Communicate, Cooperate
March 31st, 2008 @ 12:18pm
by KTAR Newsroom
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is repeating his call for Sheriff Arpaio to cooperate and communicate with Phoenix police following Arpaio's criminal crackdown at 25th Street and Bell Road last week.
"... to work together, that's what we're known for as a community," Gordon said. "I believe we'll get over this. But that's where we have to put our focus in, I think the public needs to know that."
More than two dozen of 50 suspects arrested during Arpaio's crackdown last week are suspected illegal immigrants.
Gordon said Arpaio's posse could be put to better use.
"Again, I would ask the county sheriff if he has 200 reserve officers and deputies that are available to go out and risk their lives, they should be going out after these violent criminals that already have warrants that commit the majority of violent crimes and not put the priority on individuals that are committing civil violations, broken taillights," Gordon said.
Speaking at a luncheon on Friday at the Phoenix Convention Center, honoring civil-rights leader Cesar Chavez, Gordon said "he [sheriff] calls this being tough. He calls it crime suppression. It is neither."
Despite the glaring headlines and barrage of soundbites that have hit the news, the mayor said he is not "at war" with the sheriff.

MCSO Arrests 150 In Recent Sweeps
Phoenix, Guadalupe Targeted; More Operations Slated
POSTED: 5:41 pm MST April 5, 2008
UPDATED: 6:52 pm MST April 5, 2008
PHOENIX -- During the 30 hours of operation, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Phoenix and Guadalupe crime suppression programs netted more than 150 arrests, including 73 illegal immigrants.
Sheriff's deputies and armed posse volunteers said 47 people taken into custody, nine of nine of those illegal immigrants, during the two-day Guadalupe crime sweep that began on Thursday.
Eighteen fugitives were apprehended on a variety of warrant charges, including drug possession and domestic violence, MCSO said. Nearly 30 warrants belonging to several Valley law enforcement agencies were cleared.
Recently, Arpaio launched posse saturations near Cave Creek and Bell roads and 32nd Street and Thomas Road, also a prime location for day laborers to gather, after business owners complained of rising crime.
The sheriff shook off taunts from protesters, at least one of whom had a sign supporting Dan Saban, who is challenging Arpaio in this fall's election.
Arpaio said of the protesters, "They're civil, they're making some derogatory remarks, but this is freedom of speech as long as they don't interfere with our operation. So we're going to continue to do our job."
He said as long as the protesters didn't interfere, "it doesn't bother me."
Arpaio said the operations are financed with $2 million provided by the state Legislature to hire 15 deputies to enforce immigration laws.
According to Arpaio, more crime suppression operations are on the horizon.

Bermudez said the sheriff is creating a terrifying police state. "Because people were afraid to come out and shop and go to the store and go to the laundromat. I'm so sad, because he was our hero.
