'You Don't Speak for Me', an American Hispanic Group Voices Support for Hazleton's Efforts to Deal With Illegal Immigration

WASHINGTON, March 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As trial got underway yesterday in federal court challenging ordinances enacted by the city of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, aimed at curtailing illegal immigration to that community, You Don't Speak for Me!(YDSFM), a national coalition of American Hispanics, voiced its support for the ordinances and Mayor Lou Barletta. In backing the Hazleton ordinances, YDSFM emphasized the need for strong cooperation between federal and local governments in the area of immigration law enforcement, and the important distinction between illegal aliens and citizens and legal immigrants to the United States.

The city of Hazleton is defending itself against a challenge by the ACLU and other illegal alien advocacy groups in a trial that begins today in Scranton. The Hazleton ordinances, known as the Illegal Immigration Relief Act, requires local employers and landlords to verify immigration status before hiring or renting to anyone in the city.

"There has been a concerted effort on the part of the illegal alien advocacy network to blur the distinction between illegal aliens and Americans of Hispanic origin," said Retired Colonel Albert Rodriguez, chairman of YDSFM. "Dealing with mass illegal immigration is an American issue, not one that relates to any particular ethnic group. Millions of American Hispanics flatly reject efforts to divide this nation along ethnic lines, or to link the interests of American citizens to those of people who are violating our nation's immigration laws."

YDSFM has stood shoulder to shoulder with Mayor Barletta and with other communities across the United States that have implemented similar local policies aimed at addressing a growing illegal immigration crisis. "Those of us who live in Pennsylvania, just like Americans in virtually every region of the country, are dealing with issues of job loss, wage depression, burdens to public services, including education, crime and other problems associated with unchecked illegal immigration," said Mariann Davies, a YDSFM spokeswoman and Bucks County resident.

"Local officials must place the safety, health and welfare of all the citizens in their community above the special interests of the profiteers of illegal immigration, and the persons residing in this country illegally," Davies added.

"Illegal immigration impacts the vast majority of Americans. As Americans, we wholeheartedly support the courageous efforts of Hazleton to confront illegal immigration, and do what is right and just for the citizens and legal residents of Hazleton," Davies concluded.

It sure is! I live in an area that has a huuuge Puerto Rican population. Over the years I was friends with many of them. It never once occurred to me that they were a different race; I just thought they were Americans who were originally from somewhere else, or their ancestors were...just like the rest of us AMERICANS.

And now the illegal alien supporters are telling me I'm a racist if I don't welcome the illegals because theyr'e Hispanic. They'll never understand how stupid a comment like that even sounds to me.
