Arrest made in border crash that kills six

BRAWLEY, Calif. (AP) - A person accused of driving a sport utility vehicle that crashed and killed six illegal immigrants is in federal custody.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the crash happened Friday night in Westmorland, about 125 miles east of San Diego. Survivors include a 12-year-old girl whose mother, father and younger brother died in the wreck.

The spokeswoman, Lauren Mack, said Monday that the alleged driver from Mexico was arrested Sunday on suspicion of smuggling at a hotel in nearby Brawley. He claims to be a juvenile.

Mack said witness statements suggest there were 22 people in the SUV, all believed to be Mexican. Four were hospitalized, three are being held as material witnesses, and the others fled.
