NEWSCHANNEL 5 Cameras Catch Illegals Crossing into US

SULLIVAN CITY - NEWSCHANNEL 5 cameras caught illegal s cross the border undetected.

We were on the river for a completely different story when we saw it happen. We watched as they ran through thick brush.

No Border Patrol officer was in sight until it was too late. Another group of illegals tried crossing the river in a raft. They asked landowner Noel Benavides if it was okay.

He tells them not to cross here. Benavides say he'll report them.

The landowner says this is something he sees everyday. The government has plans to build a fence along the border. Supporters of the idea say it'll curb illegal immigration.

But Benavides says illegal immigration has "been here for many years, will be for generations."

"We're not gonna stop it with a five-mile fence," he tells us.

The landowner says a Border Patrol agent just came to his office, wanting to discuss the possibility of putting a fence on his property. Benavides owns hundreds of acres of land on the river. The land has been in his family for more than 200 years.

He doesn't like the idea of a fence. He tells us he isn't happy with the complications that come with it.

"To have a fence, they have to build a road. That will cut down more brush, ruin more habitat," he explains.

We asked him if he can say no to the fence.

"That's Homeland Security. They have the authority to do it," says Benavides.

We talked to Border Patrol. They tell us they're discussing lots of possibilities, like added technology and manpower. We've learned there's a meeting in Starr County to discuss the border fence in next week.
