TEMECULA ---- Authorities arrested a suspected drug smuggler at the Interstate 15 checkpoint near Temecula attempting to bring in nearly 10 pounds of methamphetamine last week, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

About 6 p.m. on July 17, agents encountered a 38-year-old Mexican man driving a 1997 Ford F-150 at the checkpoint, said Mary Beth Caston, a spokeswoman for the agency in San Diego. During the inspection, the man became nervous and was sent to secondary inspection, she said.

After searching the vehicle, agents found a bag of methamphetamine hidden in a compartment under the manifold. The drugs had an estimated worth of $198,400, Caston said.

The suspect and the methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, she said.
