Sheriff: Deputies seize 2K pounds of pot in fake van
August 08, 2012 11:18 AM
THE MONITOR
NEAR LA JOYA — Approximately 2,000 pounds of marijuana are off the streets after authorities stopped a cloned van Tuesday afternoon.
The seizure took place along U.S. 83 between La Joya’s and Peñitas’ city limits when members of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Border Enforcement Unit noticed that the driver of a van traveling eastbound along the highway was not wearing a seatbelt, Hidalgo Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
The sheriff’s deputies pulled the vehicle over but were quickly engaged in a foot pursuit after the driver of the van ran into the nearby brush area.
U.S. Border Patrol agents and a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter were called to assist in tracking down the driver but were not successful.
Inside the van, authorities found approximately 2,000 pounds of marijuana, Treviño said.
The van had decals passing itself off as a commercial vehicle for Johnson Control Inc., with the driver wearing what appeared to be a company uniform, the sheriff said.
Further investigation revealed that the license plates are from a company in Georgia while the vehicle is registered to an individual in McAllen and is not reported as stolen, Treviño said.
Investigators are working to identify the real owner of the van and confirm the identity of the driver.
“Cloning vehicles is a common practice, but we are very aware of it and keep our eye out for these types of vehicles,” Treviño said.
