There's no notion of having an intelligent discussion of the issues. It's their way or violence.

True. What many people are coming to realize is that what the police are there to protect is not exactly your safety but the public peace and order. Often they are the same thing, but sometimes they diverge. That's why, when a criminal comes to court, it's "People of Such-and-such vs. Criminal"
