Almost five months after he kept Evansville police in a two-hour standoff, then set his ex-wife's house on fire, Juan Castro Gonzalez was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

With the help of his attorney and an interpreter, Gonzalez, 39, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to arson, a Class B felony.

Vanderburgh Superior Court Judge Wayne Trockman sentenced him to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, but he will be eligible to modify his sentence after 10 years.

A second charge of burglary, a Class B felony, was dismissed.

Gonzalez was arrested May 25 after allegedly kicking down the door of his ex-wife's house on Judson Street and threatening her and their three children. The woman had filed a restraining order against him in December 2005.

Gonzalez reportedly said he was going to set the house on fire, then proceeded to walk through the house pouring gasoline.

The woman and children ran from the house and called 911.

After a two-hour standoff with police, Gonzalez ignited a fire on the front porch of the home, prompting police to run into the house and arrest him.

Other than telling Trockman "thank you" after his sentencing, Gonzalez was silent in court.

No word on his legal status, but this newspaper doesn't usually bring it up.
I guess he thanked the judge because the living conditions in jail are better than Meh-he-co.
