Asylum seekers moved from Rotterdam Super 8 will not be sent back to NYC

Asylum seekers removed from the Rotterdam Super 8 hotel will not be moving back to New York City.

On May 15th, more than 100 people were removed from the Super 8 for fire safety code violations, and moved to different hotels in Albany. Some even turned away.

"I keep reminding people they're not cattle," said Albany County Executive Dan McCoy. "These are people who came here for a better life."

Since, families were relocated to the Baymont hotel, but were told by New York City officials by this Saturday, June 1st, migrants would have to be moved from the Baymont by Wyndham near the Albany International Airport hotel back to New York City if they did not find their own housing. According to officials, the Baymont hotel is being sold, forcing the migrants to move out.

A spokesperson for New York City Hall says "New York City and DocGo worked together with Albany County and City of Albany officials to find and secure a replacement site for the migrant families displaced from the Super 8 to remain in the area through the end of the school year so that school-aged children can finish their studies. Adding if the Super 8 comes back online and passes inspection, we may move households back to their original location."

McCoy says this is an evolving situation and migrants have moved to a different hotel in Albany County.

"We're almost at 1000 now to add in the Schenectady county people coming over we're at like 1200 to 1300 people that are here in Albany county," said McCoy. "I can't thank the people in the organizations in Albany County for being welcoming to this migrant community that has gone through hell to get here."

For the 55 students that lived at Super 8 and attended Mohonasen Central School District, Superintendent Shannon Shine says it's been a chaotic few weeks.

"Disruptive would perhaps be a simplified term," said Mohonasen Central School District Superintendent Shannon Shine. "The remainder of the school year looks good, looks stable, looks uneventful which were pretty grateful for but what happens beyond that we don't really know. We did ask will these students likely be with us in the fall in September and the answer to that was no it's extremely unlikely they'll be with us."

Last year, Mohonasen Central School District was given less than a 2 months notice to make adjustments for nearly 70 migrant children for the incoming school year. Superintendent Shine says for the 2024-2025 school year, the district will be ready either way.

"I'm actually more concerned about the students and families than I am about any logistical difficulties which we might have to face," said Superintendent Shine.

McCoy told CBS 6 the County is in contact with the Mayor Adams administration and is working on next steps for this year. A press conference is expected with more information in the coming weeks.
