During his visit to Laredo on Wednesday, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced a $300,000 boost in the fight against border violence that will help a task force fight drug trafficking along the border.
The strike force is made up of a combination of federal agencies and will target high level drug cartels.

"We're concerned of course about violence occurring in Mexico, which is spilling into the U.S.," said Gonzales:

That includes San Antonio, which is now a major hub for drug trafficking.

The strike force will help dismantle large drug operations. They've already prevented 30 tons of cocaine from crossing the border.

"This will be targeting not only the cartels themselves, but also the transporters, money launderers and the smugglers who support those efforts," Gonzales told reporters.

Gonzales met with customs agents and sat down with local leaders to talk about their needs for the future.

The attorney general says he's working with the president and congress to get more money for the drug war along the border.

Gonzales also discussed the kidnappings happening along the border, including those of several Americans from South Texas.

"What we're discovering is, for various reasons, kidnappings are not reported," said Gonzales. "Obviously, we can't be helpful unless these kinds of crimes are reported.

There are currently dozens of missing persons along the border. Many of those kidnapped have connections to San Antonio. The attorney general plans to meet with Mexican officials to express his concern about bringing those kidnapped back to the U.S. safely.

Gonzales said he's hopeful the new government in Mexico will bring positive changes along the border.

Perhaps they can donate some pesos to help build the wall.
