SYDNEY—Australian police have responded to a disturbance at an offshore detention center that has been the scene of unrest in the past.
The Immigration Department said the Christmas Island center was calm Friday following the overnight response by federal police, but did not give details on the incident.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that a fight broke out among detainees and some had makeshift weapons. ABC says a worker with the security firm that runs the center suffered minor injuries.
The broadcaster says three detainees are still protesting atop a building at the center.
Protests frequently erupt at Christmas Island, where Australia processes some asylum seekers.
In March, more than 200 people rioted at the center and tried to escape.
