Authorities detain illegal immigrants at construction site on Maui

    Updated: Aug 20, 2008 11:00 PM EDT

WEST MAUI (KHNL) - The U.S. Immigration and Customs Department detained more than a dozen people at a construction site in West Maui Wednesday.

It happened at the Honua Kai job site located near the Honoapiilani Highway/Lower Honoapiilani Highway intersection.

Those detained were initially held at the Lahaina Police station, while some were transported to Honolulu for further processing.

According to Maui Police, there are about eight illegal immigrants taken into federal custody each month in the West Maui area.

Authorities say many times, the cases are discovered during traffic stops.

The last large immigration bust on the island occurred in May when 22 illegal immigrant workers from Mexico were arrested at two popular chains in Wailea and Lahaina.
