A man who died in a hail of gunfire in January was killed because of a case of mistaken identity, authorities said Tuesday.

Juan Manuel Ocanas Barrientos, 30, was killed Jan. 11 on the 3400 block of Clavel Street.

“Detectives determined that the victim was at a place that is known for drug activity and was mistaken for someone else,” Brownsville police spokesman J.J. Treviño said, adding that the suspects are believed to be members of a Mexican drug cartel. “It was determined that these subjects are part of a transnational criminal organization.”

Police obtained warrants of arrest on charges for murder and engaging in organized criminal activity against Javier Garza Medrano, 37; Jose Luis Ibarra Morales, 30; Edgar Javier Tafoya Robles, 24; Abraham Alegria Ruiz, 27; Diego Armando Segovia Rivera, 25; and Christian Omar Camero, 29, all of whom are Mexican nationals believed to be in Mexico.

Two other men — Felipe Alvaro Cabrera, 30, and Victor Hugo Sefores, 39 — are in custody and are being held without bail. They are also charged with murder and engaging in criminal activity.

Homeland Security Investigations agents helped police identify the fugitive suspects, Treviño said.

Authorities have said that more than 10 shots were fired at Barrientos, but officials have not said how the suspects were involved or whether one or more men fired at the victim.

Treviño said the case remains under investigation and declined to release any other information.

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call Brownsville Crime Stoppers at (956) 546-8477 (TIPS).
