Photos: Madison County Sheriff's Office15 Jul 20187Two men are accused of beheading an Alabama teenage girl suffering from autism and murdering her grandmother over the woman’s ties to the Sinaloa Cartel formerly headed by “Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.

Madison County, Alabama, Sheriff’s Office Investigator Stacy Rutherford testified that Israel Palomino, 34, and Yoni Aguilar, 26, murdered 49-year-old Oralia Mendoza and her 13-year-old autistic granddaughter Maria Lopez. The investigator said the two men carried out the murders after they became suspicious of the grandmother because of her connections to the Sinaloa Cartel, AL.com reported.

The grandmother and teen traveled with the two men and a woman to pick up a batch of methamphetamine in Norcross, Georgia. During the trip, something went wrong and Palomino and Aguilar became suspicious of a setup by Mendoza who reportedly had connections to the Sinaloa Cartel, Rutherford stated.

Early on June 4, the two men woke Mendoza and Lopez and told them they were in danger and they would take them someplace safe. They got in a car and drove to a cemetery in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama.
Mendoza and Palomino got out of the car and began arguing about the drug buy, Rutherford testified about her interview with Aguilar, who confessed to the crimes. Agular said Palomino stabbed Mendoza to death. Police said that Agular was Mendoza’s boyfriend.

The two men got back in the car with the teenage girl and drove to a secluded area where Palomino told Agular to kill the 13-year-old because she witnessed her grandmother’s murder, the investigator testified. She said Agular told her that he was afraid of Palomino.

Palomino then ordered Agular to behead the girl as he made a sawing motion with his arms, Rutherford testified.

Three days later, police found the girls body and began an investigation that led back to the two men after Mendoza’s mother came forward and said the headless body might be her daughter. A week later, police confirmed the victim’s identity. About that same time, police found Mendoza’s body at the cemetery, the local news outlet reported.

Police obtained search warrants and found two knives under each of the suspect’s beds. Investigators also found blood in Palomino’s car, Rutherford testified.

Investigators said the two men became suspicious of a setup after they discovered Mendoza had removed a SIM card from her cell phone and that she had been testing to a “mystery number,” the Daily Mail reported. The news outlet also reported that in addition to Mendoza dating and living with Agular, she had also previously dated Palomino.

Very sad. How does a grandmother place her 13 year old granddaughter in such a situation? Furthermore, only an animal could cut of the head of an innocent child!

Good question. I just assumed they were because of the mention of a drug cartel. Hmm.......

Police: 13-year-old girl dead in ‘brutal’ killing, grandmother’s body also found

    MADISON COUNTY, ALA. —

Update: Oralia Mendoza’s body was positively identified through dental records by pathologists with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Madison County Sheriff’s Office officials announced June 27.

    Original story:

Police in Alabama have charged two men with the slaying of a 13-year-old girl and anticipate charges in the death of the girl’s grandmother, whose remains may have been found Friday near a rural cemetery.

Yoni Martinez Aguilar, 26, and Israel Gonzalez Palomino, 34, have been charged with capital murder in the death of Mariah Feit Lopez. WAFF in Huntsville reported that the teen and her grandmother, Oralia Mendoza, had been missing from the city since the weekend of June 2.

Mendoza was reported missing June 6 by worried relatives, the news station reported.

Lopez, whose body was found the following day in a wooded area in nearby Owens Cross Roads, was identified last week through dental records, Madison County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a news release.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Donny Shaw described Lopez’s cause of death as “heinous” but declined to say how she was killed, WAFF reported.

“It’s a very brutal means of death and whenever the public learns of it, it’s going to be shocking and it’s going to be upsetting a lot of people,” Shaw told the news station. “We want to deliver that information so that we don’t harm the upcoming cases and trials that will be had.”

A body believed to be that of Lopez's grandmother, Oralia Mendoza, 49, was found June 15 a few miles away. (Madison County Sheriff's Office)

Investigators believe that the teen was killed where her body was found.

Bethel Lemley, the owner of the property where Lopez was found, said her son-in-law spotted the girl’s body in some weeds near her driveway.

“My daughter said, ‘Mama, you can see her foot and see her leg,’” Lemley told WAFF. “I couldn’t see it, but they did.”

The homeowner said she could not understand who would commit such a crime.

“Who could have done such a cruel thing?” Lemley said. “Kill somebody and throw them off like a dog; like an animal.”

The homicide case began as a death investigation when Lopez’s body was found. At that time, detectives were asking the public for help identifying the person found.

The teen was described as wearing red pajama pants with gingerbread men on them, as well as a pink undershirt and black tank top. A news release indicated that she also had a cerebral shunt.

Gina Long, a substitute teacher who taught Lopez at Challenger Middle School, in Huntsville, described the girl as quiet and sweet in an interview with WAFF.

“She got along well with everyone in the class,” Long said. “Everyone liked her.”

She said her heart broke when she learned that the 13-year-old was the victim found dead in the county earlier this month.

“She didn’t deserve anything that could have happened,” Long said.

A Huntsville City Schools spokesman told WAFF that school administrators and officials were saddened to learn of Lopez’s death.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” Keith Ward said.

The case was first described as a homicide investigation a week after the discovery of the body, when the honor roll student was positively identified. Mendoza, who was Lopez’s legal guardian, was still missing and believed to be in danger, Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The case moved quickly at that point, with Aguilar and Palomino being developed as suspects overnight. Both men, who were acquaintances of Mendoza and her granddaughter, were subsequently taken into custody at the home they shared.

Palomino was initially arrested for possession of methamphetamine, WAFF reported. Both men were interviewed separately, at which time detectives developed enough probable cause to arrest them in Lopez’s killing.

Leads in the investigation led detectives to Moon Cemetery, where the second body was found, according to a news release issued Friday. The cemetery is about 2½ miles from the wooded area where Lopez’s body was found.

“There is reason to believe that the remains are those of Oralia Mendoza, the missing guardian/grandmother of Mariah Lopez,” the release said. “However, positive identification will have to be made by the Department of Forensic Sciences.”

The news release did not indicate if either of the men led investigators to the body’s location.

Shaw told WAFF that all indications were that the body was that of Mendoza.

“It’s a sad update, but it’s moving closer as to when we can make a positive identification (and) we can give this family some closure as to what happened, how it happened and what exactly occurred in this case,” Shaw said.
The spokesman credited the community with moving the investigation forward.

“For a murder where there were no indications, no witnesses, nothing to lean on when we began with it, the Hispanic community, the partners, the media, we’ve been able to do a phenomenal thing in just a little over seven days by coming to the arrests of two individuals,” Shaw said.

Palomino and Aguilar are both being held without bond in the Madison County jail. Aguilar is also being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Guess that answers the question where the suspects are concerned. Now I'm curious about the victims. We're they illegal immigrants, legal immigrants or U.S citizens? Maybe that information will come out soon.

Horrific details of double murder emerge during testimony at preliminary hearing

POSTED 6:01 PM, JULY 12, 2018, BY WHNT NEWS 19,
    UPDATED AT 10:37PM, JULY 12, 2018

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. - Court testimony revealed shocking details of the murders of a 13-year-old girl and her grandmother. AL.com reports a Madison County Sheriff's investigator testified in the case today. The investigators said 13-year-old Mariah Lopez was beheaded because she witnessed the killing of her grandmother Oralia Mendoza.

Israel Palomino, 34, and Yoni Aguilar, 26, are both charged with two counts of capital murder in connection to the deaths of Mendoza and Lopez. Aguilar was in Madison County District Court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
Investigator Stacy Rutherford took the stand today. The following information is what he testified to:

    • Mendoza had ties with the Sinaloa Cartel, a drug-trafficking organization.
    • Days before the killings, Mendoza went with three others to pick up a shipment of methamphetamine in Georgia.
    • The situation turned deadly when something went wrong with the trip.
    • Palomino, Aguilar, Mendoza and a woman named Leticia Garcia, who also had ties to the cartel.
    • Investigators believe that Palomino thought it was a setup.
    • Mendoza was told that she and Mariah Lopez would be taken somewhere safe early June 4.
    • Instead, the two men drove the woman and her granddaughter to Moon Cemetery on Cave Springs Road.
    • Aguilar reported that Mendoza and Palomino argued about the drug buy before Palomino stabbed her with a knife.
    • Aguilar also reported he and Palomino took Lopez to a secluded area because she witnessed the event where Palomino forced him to kill the girl.
    • Aguilar told investigators that Palomino moved his arm in a sawing motion, causing him to behead the girl.
    • Aguilar complied because "he said he was fearful of Israel."

A body was found on a farm on Lemley drive on June 7. When the sheriff's office released a description of the clothes found, Mariah Lopez' mother, who is Mendoza's daughter told them she believed the body was Mariah. Forensic evidence confirmed the girl's identity a week later. Aguilar and Palomino were already in custody.

When Aguilar confessed, authorities located Mendoza's body at the cemetery on June 15. Investigators placed both men in the area during the time of the killings with their cell phone activity. They also recovered two knives they believe to be the murder weapons. One was discovered under Aguilar's mattress, the other was under Palomino's mattress. Investigators also found blood in Palomino's vehicle.

The judged ruled that there is enough evidence in the case to move to the grand jury phase. Palomino's case is set for a preliminary hearing on July 16.
