A Nogales, Sonora, woman was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Friday to 15 months in prison for attempting to smuggle an 8-year-old boy into the United States.
Cruz Angelica Marrufo-Perez, 22, attempted to enter the country in April at the Nogales port of entry and told a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer that the boy was her nephew, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
The officer became suspicious and referred them for further inspection, where she later admitted she had made arrangements to smuggle the boy into the country.
Marrufo-Perez was charged in a Tucson federal court in May with conspiracy to transport an illegal alien for financial gain and other federal alien- smuggling charges.
