Another massacre

An armed group burst into a drug rehab center in Tijuana, Baja California, and gunned down 13 inmates Sunday evening. Witnesses say the armed group entered through the front entrance to the center, lined their victims against a wall and killed them with "high powered firearms." Minutes after the attack, unknown individuals broke into the police radio frequency to warn that this was a show of what Ciudad Juarez is and that there would be 153 more murders. It is believed the number is in reference to and retaliation for the 134 tons of marijuana seized in Tijuana last October 18.

El Universal's editorial, first paragraph, seems to sum up the country's reaction:

More laments for Juarez?

The federal government has sent more than 10,000 soldiers and police to Ciudad Juarez to restore order, has announced nine plans of collaboration between governments and has promised to cleanse the social fabric in the area. Despite this, another tragedy occurred last weekend: the murders of 14 youths at a party. What has gone wrong? It is hoped for at least a response by the federal government and not its meaningless and traditional show of "indignation."

A call for the Latino vote

US President Barack Obama called on Latinos to vote November 2, saying it would be more difficult to achieve immigration reform if those who take a hard stand on immigration were elected. "If the Latino community decides not to participate in this election, then there will be fewer votes and less chance of achieving that [immigration reform] and the other side [the Republican candidates] who are fighting against this are not going to support immigration reform, " he said in Los Angeles, California. Hispanics represented 9% of voters in 2008.

Long road, but necessary: Calderon

Mexican President Felipe Calderon assured that the strategy to combat organized crime is a long road without many spectacular results in the short term, but it is the only way there is. "The policy we have followed is to confront and not avoid or evade our problems. One of those, of course, is the challenge of security," he affirmed
