The second of two men accused of attacking a pickup truck filled with illegal entrants last year, killing two of them, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder Monday.
Both Martin Flores-Gaxiola, 19, and Rosairo Humberto Araujo-Monares, who pleaded guilty to the same charges last week, are facing 10 to 44 years in prison when they are sentenced next month by Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields.
Flores-Gaxiola and Araujo-Monares, 22, were indicted in April on two counts of first-degree murder and 21 counts of endangerment.
According to investigators, 23 illegal immigrants were in a truck headed north on Caterpillar Trail about five miles south of Duval Mine Road, west of Green Valley, when a group of men opened fire on them in the early-morning hours.
Those who survived the shooting walked to Duval Mine Road carrying the victims. A passer-by saw them and called 911.
Araujo-Monares and Flores-Gaxiola, both from Sinaloa, Mexico, told authorities they were trying to hijack a load of drugs, but no drugs were found in the pickup.
