Tampa, Florida - Immigration puts a "Hold" on a man charged in a fatal hit and run.

Wearing headphones, 30-year-old Ignacio Gonzalez focused on the voice as the interpreter translated. He listened as Judge Walter Heinrich spoke in simple terms.

In a somber voice Heinrich recited, "Mr. Gonzalez, you apparently caused an accident, drove with no license, and left the scene of the accident and somebody has died."

Gonzalez, appearing by video from Orient Road jail, stood with a court appointed attorney at his side, his head lowered.

"You cannot get out of jail," Heinrich continued,"because immigration has placed holds on you. What that means is once your criminal charges are over, your prison sentences are over, you will be turned over to immigration for deportation."

Gonzalez offered no reaction as he was excused to return to his holding cell.

Deputies say Gonzalez was at the wheel of an SUV that struck and killed motorcyclist Roger Chesteine and severely injured a female passenger. The accident occurred last Saturday night at the intersection of Wilder Road and Quail Oaks Road in Plant City.

At last check, passenger Rhonda White remains in critical condition at a Lakeland hospital.
