U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector's Blythe Station arrested four illegal aliens after a brief vehicle pursuit and foot chase Sunday morning.

At about 9:16 a.m., agents performed a vehicle stop a 1996 Honda Odyssey on Highway 95/72 near Parker, Ariz., according to agent Laura Boston, a spokeswoman for the Yuma Sector.

As an agent approached the vehicle, the driver turned the vehicle toward the agent and accelerated. The agent, Boston said, was able to avoid the vehicle as it sped off.

"The agent was out of his vehicle during the traffic stop and was at the driver's side of the vehicle, asking the driver to comply with his request to roll down the window," Boston said. "The driver pointed the vehicle in the direction of the agent as he accelerated and got back onto the highway."

The agents immediately returned to their vehicles and began pursuing the fleeing Honda.

Boston said that after a brief pursuit, the Honda pulled off the road and four occupants jumped out and ran out into the surrounding desert.

Boston said the three passengers were quickly apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

However, as an agent was pursuing the driver on foot, the man hid behind a bush and began to pull an item out of his pocket. Boston said the agent saw what he thought appeared to be a gun and fired one shot, missing the suspect.

"The man had his hands in his pocket and the agent was yelling at him to take his hands out of his pockets," Boston said.

At that time the suspect turned and began running again. The foot pursuit ended as the suspect became exhausted and surrendered to the agent.

Agents were not able to locate a weapon after a search of the suspect.

Boston said the four subjects were transported to the Blythe Border Patrol Station for processing. The three subjects who were passengers in the vehicle will be presented for removal proceedings.

The driver, Boston said, will be prosecuted for reinstatement of prior order of removal and assault on a federal officer.
