Pima County sheriff's deputies and Border Patrol agents found more than 40 illegal entrants while on the hunt for armed bandits Sunday, an official said.
Officers began looking for the bandits around noon after receiving calls that a group of border crossers had been robbed in the desert near Amado, south of Green Valley, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
Officers found 11 entrants by about 2 p.m. and had another 30 in custody by 5 p.m., Barkman said.
Officers also saw three people with "AK-47-type weapons," she said. One was taken into custody late Sunday afternoon, Barkman said.
Using Sheriff's Department dogs and Border Patrol helicopters, officers were unable to find the other two Sunday night, she said.
The entrants taken into custody were found south of Green Valley, Barkman said.
