A man crossing illegally into the United States from Mexico was killed early Tuesday morning when bandits confronted the group he was with, authorities said.
The man’s body was found Thursday morning, with signs of trauma, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
Hanke gave the following account:
About 7:50 a.m. Thursday, U.S. Border Patrol agents notified the sheriff’s department that a body had been found in the desert near Amado, about five miles west of Calle Tres and Montana Vista.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene by the responding deputies based on the suspicious nature of the death. Detectives are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The man was part of a group of border crossers who were confronted by bandits early on Tuesday morning. The rest of the group went to the Mexican Consulate and told officials there of the killing. Border Patrol agents then began looking for the victim.
