U.S. Border Patrol agents seized more than 9,000 pounds of marijuana over the weekend, the Border Patrol said.

The largest of the seizures was of 2,987 pounds of marijuana near the village of Santa Cruz on the Tohono O'odham Nation, Senior Border Patrol Agent Sean King said in a statement Monday.

King said in that case agents spotted two vehicle being driven north on Federal Route 21 about 2:30 a.m., with the headlights out.

Agents followed tire tracks through the desert until they found both vehicles abandoned with their drug loads inside, King said.

The Border Patrol seized 651.5 pounds at about 8:40 a.m. Friday along Federal Route 19 on the Tohono O'odham Nation, Haber said.

In that case, King said agents tried to stop a vehicle headed north and the driver fled.

Numerous attempts were made to use tire spikes to stop the vehicle, King said in the statement, but the driver continued fleeing until his vehicle hit a fence post near the Mexico border.

When agents walked up to the vehicle, King said, they spotted the 651.5 pounds of marijuana. No arrests were made.

The 9,121 pounds of marijuana seized has an estimated street value of $7 million, King said in the statement.
