Federal authorities seized a 1,000-pound shipment of marijuana worth about $816,000 along the U.S.-Mexico border west of Yuma on Monday.

Authorities credit a National Guardsman who reported seeing a suspicious-looking vehicle traveling north along the Colorado River, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news statement.

The vehicle's driver attempted to flee the scene when Border Patrol agents approached. The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and ran toward the river and into Mexico, according to the statement.

Agents found 45 bundles of marijuana inside the vehicle, which was a gray 2000 Jeep Cherokee.

Between Oct. 1, 2006, and June 30 of this year, agents in the Yuma Sector have seized more than 35,000 pounds of marijuana, worth $28.5 million, according to the statement. Those figures compare to 40,000 pounds worth $32.3 million seized during the same period the year prior.
